The Power of the Wave

A few weeks ago I was driving to work and noticed a lady running down the sidewalk.  She waved at a car driving by, so I assumed she knew that person.  Then she waved at the next.  And the next.  And the next.  Then I was up.  She waved and smiled. I panicked and did not wave back. What the hell was going on?

A few things happened.  First, I questioned why she was so happy? Smiling and waving at 7 in the morning.  How weird, right!?!  Then I slowly realized how awesome it was. She could care less about what people thought as they drove by. She was happy and wanted to spread it around.  HOW FREAKING COOL!!

It made me smile.  It made me feel good.  It brightened the beginning of my long trek to work.  It worked.  She did it.  Her smile and wave infected me.  It really made me think about how powerful a smile and a wave is.

I do my best to smile and say hello to everyone I cross paths with.  When I am walking or running in my neighborhood, I wave at cars as they drive by.  I would say 75% of the time people respond with a “hello”, a wave, or a smile.  Even if they do not, they are probably thinking about it as they walk or drive away.  It’s a good feeling spreading those positive vibes, even with no response.

Smile.  Wave.  Say hello.  Who knows?  They may have needed that.  I know I did when smiling lady ran by.
