Emailing My Future Self
Four years ago I stumbled upon a website that gives you the ability to write yourself an email that will be delivered on a chosen date in the future. I thought it was a pretty cool idea, so I tried it out. I was going through a rough patch in my life at the time, so I explained what was going on. I talked about some “must fixes” and a laid out a handful of goals that could be made with just a little focus and attention. I talked about what I was grateful for and why I needed to realize how much good I had in my life. But I also added a few lines that would wake me up a bit when I read them down the line. “Quit being a whiny b#$ch!” “Get off your ass and change it!”
A year later I received it. I was in a totally different place. A better place. I hit some of the goals. I missed some of the goals. I laughed at the personal jabs. And I also got pretty emotional. I was sitting at my desk at work reading this email and remembering where I was at that time. It was powerful. I needed change, and I made some changes that improved my life. It was very inspirational. So I fired off another one to be delivered in a year.
I send them sporadically now, but every time I get one it’s very exciting. I love seeing the email from FutureMe in the inbox.
Do yourself a favor and send yourself an email for the future. Talk about where you are and where you want to be. It’s a very powerful and fun exercise.
