Last week I was once again reminded of the power of pets. I had to put my 13-year-old dog down. It was extremely emotional for me and my family. The last few days that I was with him, I remembered the amazing experiences we had together as well as the countless times I bent down to give him a hug or rub his belly. During each one of those brief moments, I could take the focus of my current problem or issue and share that moment with him. These situations basically stopped time for me. I was able to be present with him simply by redirecting my attention. I remember many occasions where I stopped being stressed out just by getting on the ground and playing with him. The love and energy I shared with him throughout the years improved the quality of my life and the power of our relationship will stay with me forever.
Need a quick mental break? If you have a pet, pucker those lips and let out a whistle. Focus on the positive energy that you are exchanging with them. You’ll remember these moments and how they made you feel, even long after they are gone.
