Doug From St. Louis

Doug rejoins MindRighting to discuss the past year and the challenges he has faced.  He talks about gratitude, awareness, and how he gains strength from past experiences.

“So whatever you got going on. Today.  Tomorrow.  A couple days ago.  Still going on. Whatever it is.  Try to slow down and pause… and remember the things you already made it through.”

Here is Doug’s first video: Doug From St. Louis

This is a great video. Especially on a rainy Monday. I know that I need to do a better job slowing down and enjoying what is around me. Thank you for the reminder!

Thank you for sharing your thoughts and a piece of your story. I watched an older video you published as well and I got a lot out of it. I try to practice the same mindfulness and strive to help others when I can. Also, gratitude has gotten me through some very challenging days. I appreciate you talking about all of this. I have so many things to be grateful for today and my life is brighter and bigger than I could have ever believed it would be. I am tearing up right now thinking about it. The struggles were and are very real, but I have learned so much through out these days. Like, how to trust the process. I see growth around me, & inside of me. I know I am stronger today, my dreams are bigger than ever, but my pride and ego are still huge! so My biggest struggle today is being honest and expressing my feelings with people I care about. I have great friends who love and care about me as I do them, but Being vulnerable is a skill I fear I am not capable of. Intimacy, what is that? I want it. My hope is that someday I will be able to let it go and accept it all as it is. I believe my thoughts create my reality, but I can’t ignore sadness. You may say I need a therapist, well I do have one of those. She is wonderful! I just want to know if you have any insight on how a woman like me, can practice being more vulnerable? Do you think it is necessary for an honest meaningful relationship with ones self and others? Have you struggled with communication or expressing yourself in the past? If so, how did you over come these obstacles? (If this is too much, please don’t feel you have to answer, I understand). I believe it will be a little different for everyone, as far as how we each find our way, but I am curious to know how you have done it. I am tired of feeling like I am missing something in my life! Thank you!

Hi michelle, and thank you so much for your response and kind words. Thank you for sharing some of your story here and part of who you are. Ego and pride are a big part of our lives I believe and are direct manifestations of our fear and entitlement. However afraid I am, the bigger my ego for protection or however entitled I am the bigger my pride.
I have struggled with these things you’ve mentioned. I have overcome them, although I regress at times because that’s just what happens. But I have tools today like awareness to help me sort that out when it happens. Being vulnerable means we take risks. When we have been burned, whether the result of others behavior and breaking trust or because we made an ineffective judgement call, we lost trust and struggle to be vulnerable. Counseling is a great idea in order to explore and process this. Having key people in our lives we can talk to as well, like my best friend whose site this is, is a huge support. Then…we take more risks…hopefully with more insight we’ve gained from processing our previous experiences so we are better equipped moving forward to better assess the real risk vs perceived risk based on fear.
I agree being able to be vulnerable in a healthy way is key for long term happiness w myself and in a relationship with a strong foundation. To me it sounds like you’re on a good path of self discovery, and that, I believe, is where our growth begins. Being open minded and teachable, which can be very hard to do. So you have great strength in you already!

I hope this helps and thank you again, very much, for reaching out. You are now part of a movement of strength, insight, and inspiration this website attempts to capture and cultivate. And all of us can thank you for that…
